Coaching Volleyball

Henry A Kissinger once said, “The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.”This being said as a coach it is your task as the leader of your team to get your team to where they haven’t been before.

The first consideration you must take into account is the over all age of your players. Athletes will respond differently to team building exercises depending on the age group that they fall into. For instance elementary age students 5-12 years old will be most likely be excited about team building activities.

Middle school age students 12-15 years old will have a greater tendency to think that your “team building activities” are silly and will treat them as such. High school and olde will generally see and understand the concept behind the activity and will participate accordingly.

There are a several different ways to promote team building with in your group. The main idea behind these activities is to unify through understanding and anticipation of other players skills. The better your team members understand each other the more unified they will be and the more fluidly they will play as a team.

So lets start with team building activities for the appropriate age groups beginning with the younger students. For younger students a good activities is a slower version of what as kids we used to call “the whip”.

As most of you remember although the person in the front is moving slowly the person in the back pretty much as to run to stay connected. The goal of the leader (the first person in the chain) is to move in a way that they do not loose the person in the back.

Once that person has successfully led the team around the court once, have them shuffle to the back until the person who started reaches the front of the chain and everyone has had an opportunity to be the leader. The basic idea is that each player will take a turn in each position of the chain.

This activity teaches younger students to empathize with each team member and position within the group. It also helps them to understand the concept that everyone on the team is important and vital to the success of the group.

For middle school age players you will need to be a little more creative about team building. A great way to promote unity within your team is to use your drills to encourage participation. Activities like bump passing the ball clockwise around the circle until it has made it all the way around the circle w/out hitting the floor.

Or zig-zag passing, this means making two lines each player bumps the ball to the person standing diagonally from them making a criss-cross or zig-zag along the line. Use two balls starting on opposite ends.

This skill not only encourages concentration, and coordination but the success of the group depends on equal participation of each team member.

The goal is to get the balls all the way down with out hitting the floor. By mixing up the lines based on the positions you can encourage the athletes to work with teammates they usually don’t spend time with off the court. The more they interact face to face with their team mates the more they will be able to anticipate their teammates, style and abilities.

High School age and higher are pretty easy. Anything from fund-raising activities, to actual games can be used as opportunities for building unity within the team. As the coach you will have ample opportunities to enlighten and lead your team to new perspectives.

For example say your working on a fund-raiser and notice one of the team members is kind of off to the side not participating as much as the others. Find another team member to invite the player who’s off to the side to do some kind of special task together.

An anonymous compliment box can be helpful as well. To do this put each team members number in a box shake it up and have your team members pick a number. The number they get is the number they give a compliment to about the game or practice.

If they draw their own number it’s okay, sometimes giving themselves a compliment about the game can be more challenging than complimenting someone else. And can provide an opportunity for that person to critically evaluate their own performance.

Once everyone has written their compliment have them put it back in the box. Then hand out each of the players the compliment with their number on it. This works best when it is anonymous. If they don’t know who made the positive notice about their skills it promotes a positive attitude for all of the teammates instead of just the one who actually wrote the compliment.

Basically the only rules to the box is that the compliments have to be honest and sincere. Which with older players should happen pretty naturally. If you are working with a team that has interpersonal conflicts, it might take a few weeks of the compliment box before things start getting better. Don’t give up it will improve.

At the end of the day building unity within your team will be more than just one or two team building activities, t will be the little ways in which you as the coach, lead, inspire, and encourage your team to new heights and “places they have not been before”.

Football Boots

In the modern football world, more than ever before, minute details that enhance performance is key to success for professional players. The factors determining the difference between success and failure is so narrow that any advantage is taken. Performance enhancements in sport is often talked about as either an improvement of mental conditions and positive thinking or with physical improvements such as training techniques and diet, as well as general life style changes such as ensuring an adequate sleep pattern. However, performance can also be improved in football through having the best performing footwear. The essence of the performance of the football lies in the studs that determine speed from a standing start, grip on the surface and being able to twist and turn with ease.

From early into the life of association football there was a recognition that the varying surface quality o which the game was played meant that footwear that could cope with this was required.  Initially studs were made of metal which, while performing it’s job adequately led to serious injury to opposing players if the came into contact with the sole of a players boots.

Metal was therefore replaced by a safer leather.

Football studs are now made of varying materials, but most are composed of either rubber or plastic. Plastic studs are easy to produce and are a low cost material while rubber is a softer material that can offer a greater degree of comfort to the user. It is for these reasons that plastic tend to be dominant on softer ground in the winter conditions and rubber when the ground is firmer in dryer climates. Rubber and plastic studs can be produced so that they are either fixed to the boot or are removable and replaceable. Aluminium is a minor material for football boot studs and are nearly always removable so that different lengths can be utilised depending on the surface of the pitch. Recent designs of football boots have positioned the studs in such a way that the weight of the user is evenly spread across the sole of the foot which can make a player move quicker and more efficiently.

Each type of stud and material used is designed for different surfaces of play. Long aluminium studs are required on soft ground as their grip is deeper. In soft ground the user will not feel the effects of the reduced comfort found in aluminium studs. In soft ground plastic studs are fit for purpose as they are shorter in length so offer more comfort and speed with grip not causing such a degree of attention. Rubber studs are ideal for the hardest of surfaces and are oft used on false surfaces such as Astroturf and indoor facilities. On these surfaces the heel faces greater impact with the surface so the studs will be slightly longer on the heel than the front area of the foot and around the toes.

As football continues to evolve as a multi million pound industry the demand for any slight improvement that can be gained from footwear continues and so the technology in studs will continue to be explored so that players can maximise their grip, speed and ability to administer dynamic change in direction.

Number one: Fast break shooting. With this drill, you will learn how to quickly run down the court on transition and improve your ability to make transition jump shots under control. In order to perform this drill, have the players in the top corners of the court pass the ball to the players at the elbow closest to them.

The two players who have just received the ball and the player at the free throw line will all take a jump shot and get their own rebound. The player initially at the free throw line will give an outlet pass to one of the corner players and run behind that player. That player will then dribble to the middle of the court, and head to the opposite end.

Number two: Elbow to elbow. To perform this drill, you will need to have a partner. Move to either elbow of your partner as your partner feeds you the ball. Square up and shoot. Right after you have released the ball, turn up, run, and touch half court.

Number three: Form shooting drill. To perform this drill, stand two or three feet from the backboard and on one side of the basket. With your shooting arm alone, shoot a bank shot into the basket, making sure that you use perfect form. Rebound the ball and shoot again. Shoot at least fifteen shots from each side of the basket, using your right arm from the right side of the basket and your left from the left side of the basket. After completing the fifteen shots, step back two or three feet further away from the basket and do the drill again.

Volleyball Spandex

Volleyball spandex is as much a part of the game as the ball. Worn by starting juniors to Olympians and top pros. Its form fitting qualities and flexibility can make the players appear like superheros. Especially in a fast action game that constantly uses the words attack, spike, joust and dig.

Where did this miracle fabric come from? A couple of places actually. First spandex was invented in 1959 by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont’s laboratories in the US. Second, spandex is combined with other fabrics to make the final garment more flexible. Typically spandex is as small as 10% of the final gament. When initially introduced, it revolutionized much of the clothing market. The chemical make up makes shorts, shirts, jerseys and uniforms last longer as it does not break down as quickly from exposure to sweat, body oils and sunscreen.

Spandex is really a play on the word expands and is most commonly used in North America. Other parts of the world call it, and its slight variations, names including elastine, polyurethane, lycra and a variety of other names. The elasticity of spandex enables for it to expand up to seven times its length and return to its original shape while being stronger and more durable than rubber. The combining with other materials such as cotton and polyester makes it soft and comfortable.

All of this makes it a great choice for volleyball. The sport requires a player to make essential competitive moves such as jumping, spiking, digging, serving and blocking. A versatile garment lets the player focus on making a spectacular play while not worrying about their uniform binding, pinching, bunching or restricting their movements. By returning again to its original shape it ensures embarrassing accidents don’t occurr or players constantly readjusting their uniforms. By being soft, supple and a little slippery a player can move across the floor easier as they make a spectacular play. Spandex is additionally used in other sports including cycling and wrestling.

In the volleyball world a few of the most favored brands are Mizuo and Asics. Mizuno is the official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic volleyball team. These are the brands

of choice by Olmpians and leading pros as they wick moisture and sweat away keeping players dry and comfy.

These brands and others can be found at vbvolleyball.com. The newest styles, colors and funky patterns are availbe for sale to you and your team. Customization is available for selected items to make you look like the volleyball spandex wearing rock star you are.

Volleyball Tips

Just like any other sport, players need to be proficient and likewise, with every other sport, practice makes perfect. Volleyball is not different either. The volleyball tips below will help you have a better chance of winning your volleyball game and also help you to become an improved volleyball player.

Tips on blocking,

One of the important things to do is to keep your eyes on the ball during the game. It may not be easy but it is certainly very essential. If you miss the ball once, work hard to get it the next time and this will give you a guide on what you will need to do for your next move.

Push the ball forward and down to lessen the chance of the ball dribbling in front of you. Other volleyball tips to help you with blocking are to know the opposing hitters and keep your hands ball-width apart.

Volleyball tips on serving

The best serving techniques can make you a champion. Toss the ball to enable your hand contact directly on the serve. Contact the stem of the ball whilst it is still in the air to make it harder for your opponent to hit the ball back. Make sure your serving is directed at a particular place or area.

Volleyball tips on passing

If you are required to pass the ball, you must first get into position. This means that you will have to get the ball between your knees and pass it at about your zipper. Make sure to bend your knees and not your waist. Bending at the waist will deter you from keeping your eyes on the ball or see what is going on.

Above all, excellent physical endurance, skills and athletic abilities will give you an advantage in this sport where players always tend to score points against each other by smashing and blocking. Ensure flexibility, quickness and most of all a perfect balance that will help you to perform well. At the end of the day, practice makes perfect.
